Custom Notion Cover made in Kittl

If you love customizing your Notion setup, making your own Notion cover images is one of the easiest ways to make your pages feel personal and cohesive. In this tutorial, we'll walk through exactly how to design a Notion cover using Kittl — a beginner-friendly online design tool perfect for aesthetic headers, minimal graphics and text layouts.

Please note: to export images bigger than 800px from Kittl, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan. If you don't want to upgrade, you can instead export your image at 800px wide and use a free upscaler tool like Cloudinary Image Upscale to make it bigger.

Step 1: Pick your style

Think about how you want your Notion workspace to feel. Some popular styles include:

  • Minimal & neutral: muted tones, clean typography, marble or linen textures
  • Cozy & soft: warm colors, watercolor washes, hand-drawn illustrations
  • Bold & modern: gradients, abstract shapes, neon highlights
  • Natural & earthy: botanicals, beige tones, organic brush strokes

Browse through our aesthetic Notion covers for inspiration or browse Kittl's template library.

Step 2: Set up your Kittl artboard using the right Notion cover size

Notion automatically crops cover images depending on screen size, but the recommendations are:

  • Dimensions: 1500 x 600 pixels (minimum, for retina displays use 3000 x 1200)
  • File type: JPG or PNG
  • Orientation: Wide landscape, with the most important content in the middle

With that in mind, open Kittl and set up your canvas:

  1. Go to Kittl
  2. Sign up or sign in
  3. Click + New Project
  4. Set your artboard size to 1500x600 px (or 3000x1200 px for high res retina displays). Keep the DPI at 72.
  5. Click create

Step 3: Design your Notion cover

  1. Click the artboard title and use the Color picker to select a background color.
  2. Add text, graphics, or images that reflect your Notion theme. You can browse Kittl's illustration and photo library or drag and drop your own images.

Here are some design tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep important stuff in the middle – Notion crops the cover image dynamically based on screen size, so keep key content in the middle of your design
  • Use consistent fonts – If your dashboard has a vibe (e.g., soft pastel planner, dark academic workspace), pick a font that matches it
  • Keep contrast readable – Notion scales down and crops the image on mobile, so avoid designs with small text or edge-hugging graphics
  • Balance negative space – Don't overcrowd your header; let it breathe
  • Use brand colors – If you use your Notion for work or personal projects, stay consistent with your brand palette

Kittl has a massive library of fonts and illustrations that make it easy to create something unique — even if you're not a designer.

Step 4: Export your design

When you're done:

  1. Click Export
  2. Choose JPG or PNG
  3. Click Download

In order to export images bigger than 800px using Kittl, you will need to upgrade to a paid plan. If you don't want to upgrade, you can instead export the image at 800px wide and use a free upscaler tool like Cloudinary Image Upscale to make it bigger.

That's it — you've just made your own Notion cover!
